What is 22ct gold?
22ct gold is 91.6% pure gold, alloyed with a small amount of copper (and sometimes silver) for durability. It's the historic standard for British gold coinage — sovereigns, half-sovereigns, double-sovereigns and quarter-sovereigns are all 22ct. It's also the standard purity for traditional Indian, Pakistani and Middle Eastern jewellery.
The hallmark is "916" on jewellery; coins carry their own engravings (Britannia, St George, year of issue, royal portrait).
The formula for 22ct gold value
22ct value/g = (spot_per_oz ÷ 31.1034768) × 0.916
At £2,100/oz:
- Fine gold per gram: £67.52/g
- 22ct per gram: £67.52 × 0.916 = £61.85/g
- Melt value of one full sovereign (7.98g): £493.56
⚠️ Don't scrap your sovereigns
If a dealer offers you melt value for a sovereign, they are not the right dealer. Reputable UK bullion houses (Royal Mint, BullionByPost, Atkinsons, Hatton Garden Metals, Chards) will buy sovereigns at 95–100% of their retail price — which is itself above melt.
Other reasons to keep sovereigns whole:
- CGT exemption. UK legal-tender gold coins (sovereigns of all sizes, Britannias, Lunars, Queen's Beasts) are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, no matter how much you sell them for. Scrapping eliminates this exemption.
- Numismatic value. A 1989 Anniversary sovereign, a 2002 Shield sovereign, or any pre-1933 sovereign can be worth multiples of melt to collectors.
When 22ct jewellery scrap makes sense
If you have broken Indian/Pakistani jewellery, mangled bangles, or unhallmarked 22ct pieces with no collectable value, scrapping is the right call. Look for:
- Refiners and specialist Asian-gold buyers — often the best rates (94–97% of melt)
- UK bullion dealers — solid rates and quick turnaround (90–95%)
- High-street jewellers — convenient but usually 75–85%
