What is 9ct gold?
9ct (or 9-karat) gold is an alloy that is 37.5% pure gold, mixed with copper, silver and small amounts of zinc or palladium to give it the strength and colour required for everyday jewellery. The remaining 62.5% explains why 9ct rings, chains and earrings hold up to daily wear — pure gold is too soft for most jewellery.
In the UK, 9ct is by far the most common gold purity for high-street jewellery. You'll usually see the "375" hallmark stamped inside a ring or on a chain clasp.
The formula for 9ct gold value
The melt value of 9ct gold per gram is straightforward:
9ct value/g = (spot_per_oz ÷ 31.1034768) × 0.375
For a worked example: if gold spot is £2,100/oz, then:
- Price per gram of fine gold: £2,100 ÷ 31.1035 = £67.52/g
- Price per gram of 9ct gold: £67.52 × 0.375 = £25.32/g
- Value of a 10g 9ct ring: 10 × £25.32 = £253.20
What dealers actually pay for 9ct scrap
Real-world UK 9ct scrap prices land below the melt value because the dealer needs a margin to refine and resell:
- Reputable refiners and bullion buyers: 88–95% of melt value (best for >30g lots)
- Jewellers and pawnbrokers: 70–88%
- Cash-for-gold high-street shops: 50–75% — usually the worst offers
Always get at least two written quotes. If you have something distinctive, get a jeweller's opinion before scrapping — Victorian, Art Deco or hallmarked Birmingham pieces may be worth more whole than melted.
